Ivan Kožarić is one of the most important Croatian artists of all time, born on June 10, 1921 in Petrinja. He began his artistic career at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, after which he resided in Paris in 1959/60. where he comes into contact with contemporary European art. In the early 1960s, Kožarić was a member of Gorgona, an art group that from 1959 to 1965 brought together the most important names in contemporary conceptual Croatian art. In his artwork, he often changes expression (from realistic portraits to abstraction), is imaginative, always prone to experimentation, irony, and radical artistic behavior. He makes figurative and abstract sculptures, installations, assemblages, ready-made, creates artistic actions and ambiences, is engaged in painting and drawing. He has exhibited in about sixty solo and about two hundred group exhibitions, at home and abroad. His works can be found in numerous museum and private collections in the country and around the world, and he is the author of numerous public sculptures.
