https://mestrovic.gliptoteka.hazu.hr/en/
The year 2023 marks the celebration of the 140th anniversary of birth of Ivan Meštrović (1883–1962), fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and one of the most prominent Croatian sculptors. His artworks form part of the Croatian 19th–21st Century Sculpture Collection of the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. A major portion of Ivan Meštrović's sculpture works belongs to the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which makes Meštrović one of the most represented artists in the museum holdings. The exhibited artworks show a cross-section of nearly all the phases in Meštrović's oeuvre. With this virtual exhibition, the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts joined the celebration of the 140th anniversary of birth of the most prominent Croatian sculptor of the 20th century, whose numerous artworks form part of its holdings. The virtual exhibition presents thirty-nine catalogued sculptural artworks by Ivan Meštrović from the Croatian 19th–21st Century Sculpture Collection of the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Particularly noteworthy among them are compositions, portraits and nudes created during Meštrović's academic years in Vienna, as well as reliefs, portraits and sculptures of sacral and religious nature, characteristic of his Zagreb period. The presented artworks by Ivan Meštrović from the holdings of the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts enable the observer to fully comprehend the genesis of Ivan Meštrović's style, i.e., the development from creating under the influence of art nouveau and symbolism in the early phase and searching for a personal style in the fold of heroic monumentalism to his comeback to classical art, on the foundations of which he developed his personal artistic style during his stay in Zagreb. The American phase in Ivan Meštrović's oeuvre, represented by two sketches for the equestrian monument to the Indians, is particularly emphasised here. With this virtual exhibition, the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts presents Meštrović's rich legacy in its holdings, which is of paramount importance for successful research and understanding of the complete oeuvre of the most famous Croatian sculptor.
The virtual exhibition was funded by the City of Zagreb.
