The book “The history of the Collections of Plaster Casts of Antique Sculpture of the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the European Context” brings a unique and comprehensive analysis of this important, and hitherto neglected, segment of cultural history. It is a bilingual publication published by the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which represents the first monographic overview of the collections of plaster casts in Croatia, offering a detailed insight into the historical development, importance and role of casts in the history of sculpture – from antiquity to the present day.
Through interdisciplinary research and comparative analysis in relation to the most famous European collections, the book examines the significance of plaster casts and their role in understanding ancient sculpture. It also highlights the importance of the Glyptotheque in preserving and presenting casts as part of cultural heritage. Through a richly illustrated catalogue that includes archaeological and artistic sculpture, the material is unified for the first time and the European workshops from which the casts originate and the localities of the originals are systematically presented and identified. On 394 pages, the book features 217 photographs, offering extensive documentation and analysis that positions the Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts as a key institution specializing in plaster casts and sculpture.
